Innovation, Quality, and Service from Kinnaird Bagpipes
The Kinnaird Edge Drone Reeds are the first drone reed to incorporate a patented bendable tongue into the design. This unique feature allows the piper to adjust the strength of the drone reed without the use of the bridle. This is important since it allows the piper, for the first time, to make these adjustments independently. The bridle position determines the tongue’s vibration frequency and this needs to be matched to the bore of the bagpipe. This coupling between the reed and the bore is critical to optimum sound and performance. All other reed designs require you to change this length to accommodate blowing strength. In many cases this leads to a mismatch between the acoustics of the tongue and the bore, which reduces coupling and deteriorates sound. The bendable tongue design allows a complete range of strength adjustment in one reed. The same reed can be adjusted to accommodate the blowing strength of a new piper all the way up to the strongest band players.
Many of the great features of the originals reeds are still present in the Edge design – carbon fibre tongue, waterproof glass fibre body, poly nose cone with threaded pitch adjuster, world class air efficiency and moisture resistance. The nose cones have also been upgraded with an “easy out” design that greatly simplifies removal and installation.
What is key to any drone reed design is the sound. The Kinnaird Edge Drone Reeds will not disappoint. The patented bendable tongue allows each reed to be set up with the optimum tongue frequency to match the bagpipe bore. This coupling produces a rich, vibrant, brilliant sound. The bass and tenors have been designed to blend perfectly with one another to give you a truly cane-like experience with a minimal amount of effort.

I have a set of pipes from a modern maker that are beautiful but have always been finicky to reed. I have tried a number of makes and never found one that worked well....until I tried the Edge reeds. I've used other Kinnaird drone reed for years but the adjustability of the Edge reeds proved just the thing to tame the finicky pipes. Awesome reeds!, December 19th, 2018 12:53 am By: Peter Patton(Piper ) Read my other reviews
I love these Edge drone reeds. They literally saved my 2017 McCallums from being sold off, as I was never really happy with my sound. Turns out it was just my previous synthetic drone reeds that I was unhappy with. The Edge reeds have a great bold sound and are easy to adjust the strength with the adjustment key. The consistent strike ins have improved my confidence and I'm in love with my pipes again! These reeds solve everything, September 18th, 2018 12:39 pm By: Jim Rose
Like many others have said, these do take patience at first. Once you get the hang of them, though, it's quite easy, and you can adjust them to perfectly match your chanter reed. They do everything that is advertised, and indeed, they do sound fantastic. They also make the strike-ins a lot easier and more consistent once they are correctly adjusted.
I use these in a Bannatyne hide/synthetic bag with a Ross system, with acetyl drones. There is some moisture that accumulates in the drones after awhile, but I have not experienced a single stoppage or other issue due to moisture.
This design really is a breakthrough for making the instrument easier to play, while sounding better at the same time. I recommend these over any other drone reeds on the market, especially if you are a beginner or play an easy setup. I have had these reeds since about the middle of August and have played them almost every day.I am currently using them in Naill drones with an ABW Sinclair chanter and a Shepherd reed and without a doubt this is the best sound that I have ever attained with synthetic reeds. The bendable tongue adjustment is revolutionary for setting the exact strength that you want to match your chanter reed and the set screw in the nose cone for fine tuning pitch that has been a hallmark of Rob's reeds since the original version of Kinnaird Reeds came on the scene works equally well. I just played for 45 minutes and these reeds handled the moisture build up without any shut offs.I am using a tube water trap in a Canmore hybrid bag. Hats off to Rob for this innovative design! Someone crown Rob Kinnaird as The Pope of Drone Reed Making! I'm complete amazed at how these reeds sound. Even better than the first Evolution Drone Reeds. incredible sound. I'll never buy another brand. Amazing! Great sound, with ease of playing!, June 8th, 2018 03:21 pm By: Daniel Mallais(Piper Beginner) Read my other reviews
I am so satisfied with my Kinnaird evo reeds, that I decided to get a set of the new edge drone reeds for my other pipes, which are McCallum. NO sacrifice in tone at all when set up easy, as opposed to other reeds from moving the bridle.
However, it can be quite tricky to set up properly, a ton of patience is required, the tenor reeds were easy enough, but the bass drone requires LOTS of adjusting, as it was quite temperamental and would only howl and nothing else depending on the adjustment, atleast in my McCallum drones.
So, if you are a beginner like me, I suggest you get your teacher/instructor to help with your setup and adjusting, again these reeds require much more patience to set up then conventional reeds in my experience.
The great tone, and efficient setup is DEFINITELY worth it though! And so I give it a 5/5! Fantastic product :-) Wow! I'm thrilled!, April 12th, 2018 11:33 pm By: Barbie Sands(Piper 4) Read my other reviews

I stuck the Kinnaird Edge reeds into my MacLellan pipes and was blown away. After adjusting the strength to my chanter reed they gave a bold, full tone even with the easy setup I play. Easily pitched to the ideal tuning height and very efficient. I highly recommend these reeds. Kinnaird Edge Drone Reeds, February 21st, 2018 07:47 am By: Carol Jaquith(Piper 5) Read my other reviews
LOVE the new Edge Drone Reeds. Still working on the outside tenor drone but otherwise they sound great and have been easy to use. Top ranked, February 16th, 2018 11:39 am By: Stephen Rooklidge
I have consistently used Kinnaird reeds in my pipes and have found them to be stable, air-efficient, and easily provide a big sound. I had been looking for a drone reed that would play in my Burley bagpipes that would be able to reach low enough in pitch that I could play an old Hardie chanter at Bflat. Although the first version of the KCF came close, the new Edge reeds provide the ability to vary in pitch from Bflat to modern pitch in the same set of drones. And the sound is simply cane-like amazing. Moderate buzz and keeps the harmonics to a steady range, while being air efficient. This is the reed I have been looking for. Thanks to Rob and the crew for another excellent product!
